A Rare Renaissance Impression After the Venetian Master

"This remarkably large 16th-century Italian etching depicts the dramatic Vision of St. Peter, a composition directly inspired by Jacopo Tintoretto’s original masterpiece located in the Chiesa Madonna dell’Orto in Venice. While the engraver remains unidentified, the quality of the line work suggests a master hand active in the late Renaissance period.

For the serious collector of Old Master prints, the rarity of this piece cannot be overstated. With only one other recorded example held in the Rijksmuseum (inv. RP-P-2004-26), this is a museum-grade acquisition. The etching is printed on period-accurate laid paper, featuring a distinct small circle watermark, further authenticating its 1500s origin.

Condition Report: The print presents as a strong, dark impression. The paper shows a warm, aged patina with very minor foxing along the edges, consistent with 450+ years of history. No significant tears or restorations are noted.

Provenance: An art market sketch representing the subject of this print is attributed to Filippo Pedrini and may relate to the origins or context of this print (Koller auction, 2023).
